Mahakumbh is not only the biggest religious event around the world, but also a cosmic event in the solar system. Why I call it as a cosmic event? My personal observation : Mahakumbh started Jan 13th on the day of Sankranti. Planets started aligning from Jan 18th after sunset which were visible to humans across the world 🌎.

Many planets were visible to humans across the world during this Mahakumbh time. I was lucky enough to see planet Venus in the twilight sky on Feb 1st. The amazing spiritual event, Mahakumbh, ends with planets “parade”, where 7 planets aligns in the night sky after sunset.

There is a strong connection between these planet parade and the Mahakumbh happening in the prayagraj.

What is Mahakumbh?

Kumba Mela, in general, is celebrated every 12 years once when planet Jupiter completes one round, around the sun. Also there is ardha kumbh which occurs once in every 6 years. When it comes to the great Mahakumbh, this phenomenal event happens once in every 144 years. The planet Jupiter which is considered as Teacher (Guru) of devas(demo gods) takes 12 years to complete one revolution around the Sun as per the reference from Earth. After completing 12 kumbha melas -12 x 12(twelve rounds around the Sun) makes 144 years where Mahakumbh occurs.

Legends of Kumbha mela

As we all know the story of Ksheera sagara madhanam, where Devas and Asuras started churning the milk ocean by making King of snakes Vasuki as rope and Mount Mandara as churning tool.

As the mountain was falling inside the sacred milk ocean, there were not able to churn. After seeing them failing to churn Lord Vishnu takes Kurma avatar (giant tortoise). On back of the giant tortoise, they place the mountain and start the churning of milk ocean.

From that first emerges the most deadly and dangerous poison which is about to consume the entire three worlds. Devas and Asuras who got frightened at the sight of deadly poison prays to lord Shiva to rescue the three worlds. Lord shiva consumes the dangerous poison and saves the three worlds.

They continue their churning; many great and valuable things emerge from the oceans along with Lakshmi devi and finally Amrutham (immortal nectar) emerges. A fight breaks out between Devas and Asuras. In meanwhile as per the instructions of Asuras teacher ,Shukracharya, named Jayanta carries Amrutham so that Devas won’t be able to have it.

While he was carrying, few drops fell down on four places and they are Haridwar, Prayag raj, Nashik and Ujjain. These are the four places where kumbha mela is celebrated based on the planetary position of Jupiter (Guru of Devas), Sun and the Moon.

Summing Up

Devotees visit Kumbha mela to take divine bath to absolve once committed sins and whereas others perform to get liberated from the cycle of birth and death. It is also said that during Kumbha mela, the river waters in which the drops of Amrutham (immortal nectar) fell will have special powers.

Happy to write this blog article during Mahakumbh, even though I was not able to visit the spectacular event. Writing about it makes me feel blessed and happy.
