What is Pradosham? Every month on the lunar thirteenth day, that is, on the Trayodashi, people worship Lord Shiva as this is considered to be an auspicious time to absolve one’s sins, to ward off negative energy in life, and to obtain good health. When does one need to perform Pradosha puja to the Lord of the Universe, Shiva? After sunset (Sandhya time), one and half time period is called Pradosha Kala.
Generally, devotees do Pradosha vrat by fasting until the evening, praying to Maa Parvathi and Lord Shiva. During Pradosha kala, they do abishekam or chant mantras. After the Pradosha kala puja, the one who observe vrat will break it by having mild food.
Legends of Pradosha Kala
During the Kshira Sagara churning,Mount Mandara was used as a churning tool. Lord Vishnu takes the Kurma avatara to hold Mount Mandara on his back, and the Serpent King Vasuki as a rope. One side was the Devas(Demi Gods), and the other side Asuras(Demons). They start churning for Amrutham (immortality medicine). Different items came out during the Churning of the ocean along with the dangerous poison that was annihilating the entire universe with its poisonous fumes. Everyone got terrified by seeing this halahala(poison). Lord Vishnu, who saw the panicked Devas and Asuras, advises them to pray for Lord Shiva’s help. As per their request, Lord Shiva consumes the deadly halahala capable of annihilating the entire universe. The time when Lord Shiva consumed poison to save the universe is called Pradosha Kala.
The one who prays to Lord Shiva on this auspicious time will get their wish fulfilled, lead a happy and peaceful life. There are many Pradoshams and among these; Somavaram Pradosham and Shani Pradosham are considered auspicious.
