The renowned festival Dussehra is celebrated heroically among Hindus around the world. Devi Navratri are celebrated nine days, and the tenth day is called Dussehra or Vijayadashami.
Spiritual and philosophical significance
First three days among the Devi Navratri’s signify Tamo Guna. During these days we worship furious forms of Durga Devi. The next three days is dedicated Goddess Lakshmi, which represents Rajo Guna. Last but not the least, the final three days represents Satva, dedicated to Goddess Saraswati(knowledge). After these nine days comes Vijayadashami. A person who can overcome all these three Guna’s of prakriti can attain moksha, meaning, he reached the ultimate purpose of Life.
Two Prominent stories for celebrating
Besides this, we all know the popular story why we celebrate Dussehra, it’s the Victory of good over Evil. The greatest war for righteousness between Lord Rama and the evil doer Ravana happened for 10 days, on the 10th day, Rama kills Ravan which is on Vijayadashami. Hence it is commonly called Dussehra (Dusse meaning ten headed demon and hra means to kill).
Another story goes like this; Mahishasura, buffalo headed demon received a boon that he can’t be killed by God or man. Goddess Durga devi takes birth with powers of trinity who furiously battled the demon for nine days. On the auspicious day of Vijayadashami, Devi kills the demon and declare victory of Good over Evil.
