Today we will learn some interesting facts about our neighbor, the red planet. The common human nature is the curiosity to know about neighbor’s whereabouts. When we are alone we look for friends.

Similarly, we humans who reside on planet Earth are looking for any kind of life form in other planets from many decades and no luck till date.

General information about the planet Mars

Mars’ atmosphere is thin, the main gases which forms the Mars atmosphere are Carbon dioxide, Nitrogen and Argon gas. Apart from these gases Mars atmosphere lack protection from asteroids, comets and meteorites, making the planet a hostile place for life.The name Mars comes from the Greek war god.

Mars has two moons which are Phobos and Deimos. These names are derived from Greek war god horses.

Temperature on Mars highest will be 70 degrees Fahrenheits whereas lowest is -225 degrees Fahrenheits.

Apart from 24 hours a day on Mars and the Earth, there is another similarity which is rotation towards the sun. It axis is tilted 25 degrees and is almost similar to that of the Earth.

Planet Mars is smaller than Earth.

It’s the 4th planet in the solar system.

Inhabitants of Mars are called Martians.

What about inhabitants of the Earth? What others call us? “The Earthlings”. Also, humans on Earth are called “Homo Sapiens”.

Travelling distance between Mars and Earth is 225 million kilometers, where as the distance between Sun and Mars is 228 million kilometers.

One day on Mars is similar to Earth hours 24.6 hours it is called as sols. (short form to solar day)

Is Mars Dead planet?

In simple words yes, it’s a dead planet which has landscape similar to Earth with volcanos, rivers and seas, unfortunately the planet has turned into mere desert and hence the evidence to prove once there was water and life on Mars. Then how did our neighbor planet lost its luster and atmosphere? Mars has a very thin atmosphere.

How this once beautiful planet lost it atmosphere and what exactly happened here? Scientists are yet to find the answer to this question. Mars has biggest volcano in the solar system- “Olympus mon”.

Why is it called Red Planet?

The iron on rocks of the Planet Mars does oxidization which turns into red color and the dusty winds which blows into atmosphere makes it look like red planet. The planet has many colors’ -red, gold, brown and even Tan.

Thus, when we look into night sky from telescope from bule planet, it appears as red in color in the night sky as it is 225 million kilometers away from us.

Life on MARS

Interesting topic we humans are searching for this answer from many decades, no luck to date, not even on the planet Mars. Even though the NASA curiosity rover found the evidence of water that existed on the planet few million years ago, it was unable to find any kind of life form like the microbes which were the cause for life on the red planet.

Is Planet Earth being the only planet which as life in the entire solar system? yes, for now we are in constant search for life forms in other planets within the solar system and exo planets. Martian movie is another example which showcased us how though life will be for humans in the red planet.

Nasa rover is collecting and bringing back 35 rocks and soil on Mars for research on Earth through the Perseverance mission. By 2030 we will be able to know what exactly happened and happening on planet Mars.
